Giza Pyramids, Giza, Egypt
Date Visited: June 8, 2016
Time Spent: 3 hours, but I wanted to stay forever
Collection: It's the pyramids... figure it out
A trip to Egypt isn't really a trip to Egypt if you don't visit the pyramids. These world wonders have sparked imaginations of young and old for millennia- and rightly so! Ancient Egypt, and the dream of the pyramids is probably the source behind most of my career trajectory, and I'm okay with it.
It's best to visit the pyramids early in the morning, before the sun gets too hot, and the other tourists wake up. Obviously you're going to want to take advantage of the lower tourism numbers after the revolution and climb in as many as possible- upgrade that ticket to the max!! Now some monuments don't always live up to their hype, disappointing even the most educated of travellers. I am happy to inform you, that this is the real deal. Take everything you ever hoped for, then multiply it by 1,000, and maybe you can get the impression one has when first seeing these megalithic structures.
Due to reduced tourism, you really feel like Indiana Jones, or any of those seemingly important people on National Geographic and History Channel specials. The site is quiet, and if you're lucky, like I was, you'll have the burial chambers all to yourself and realize nothing else in your life has ever meant as much as this moment. No photos are allowed inside the structures. You shouldn't take photos anyways, because living life behind a screen never did anybody any good.
Don't ask how many times I cried here
Constructed over 4,500 years ago, we still aren't 100% positive on how the pyramids were built. (No, it wasn't aliens, and no, it wasn't slaves either. #EducateYourself and stop blindly believing bible stories). Maybe when you go, you can get some measurements and come up with a theory of your own.
You're only allowed to climb to a certain height, both for your safety, as well as for the protection of the monuments. Of course, that doesn't stop one from trying before being told off and shamefully climbing back down, cursing yourself for not being sneakier about it. Obviously some in recent times have achieved this, but don't be foolish like this guy and get banned for life, or worse!
Don't forget to visit as much of the rest of the complex as possible, there's more the Giza than just the pyramids, and you'll get a deeper understanding and appreciation for them if you learn about the site as a whole. Try not to cry, splurge on that camel ride, and take all the photos because this is a once in a lifetime experience!
