Travel back in time to the glorious age of slow travel. The grandeur of packing in style. A trunk for everything and everything in a trunk. The new exhibition “Legendary Trunks” created by Nordic Exhibitions & Events, has its premiere in Amsterdam at the Beurs van Berlage exhibition hall, Amsterdam. This is a Louis Vuitton exhibition from one of the world’s largest collection of suitcases belonging to Swedish collector, Magnus Malm.
Brb, packing up everything I own to live out of trunks from now on
If you like trunks and feeling like the luxurious person you always dreamed you would be, go exploring in this exhibition. As a person of limited means, the name Louis Vuitton always had a little stigma attached to it. Something I could never afford, so I might as well hate it so I never feel like I’m missing out! I first thought it would be some sort of marketing scheme for the L.V brand itself, but it is really all about the trunks and the amazing stories behind them. The material culture lover inside of me was thoroughly satisfied.
Before you go in, you are able to pick up a free audio guide if you would like to hear more in-depth stories about the particular trunks you are looking at. There is minimal signage in the exhibition itself, so if you’re hungry for information, I highly recommend it.
The oldest trunk in the exhibition dates back from 1850, with the exhibition itself being divided into themes after a quick timeline introduction. Then prepare yourself to be astounded at what can actually fit in a trunk. There’s a trunk for everything- trust me!
Library trunk? Not want... need.
Apart from just showing the trunks, the displays are very personal, you can imagine that most of the trunks were just recently used, that the owner is packing for their next adventure. You really get to understand the trunks and how people used them. #SappyMoment. You’re going to want to take at least three of them home, and only travel by steamer ship or train from now on.
As the exhibition is run through a third party, it will no doubt travel to other venues after its run through Feb 18 in Amsterdam. So keep your eyes peeled!
